Update - The Permatex repair seems to be holding up. So if you want a piezo, you have to buy the entire burner for $50. Jetboil does not offer a separate peizo unit for the flash as it seems to be an integral part of the burner. I will run the unit for 10 minutes to see if it holds up. I did try repairing the melted insulation with Permatex liquid electrical tape and the healthy spark is back - not shorting out anymore. The Titanium Flint lighter is a good backup. The original answer is right that you should bring a separate ignition source.

Unless you have some high quality insulation that you can install yourself, you will be replacing this thing constantly. Upon examination at home I discovered that the spark was shorting out underneath the ceramic sleeve to the base of the burner. My new one worked 5 times and then stopped. The white insulation on the piezo ignitor wire is of a poor quality and will not withstand the heat generated by the unit - so it melts. The original answer misses the mark for the jetboil flash. So in my opinion it's not worth trying fix the old one for that price if you don't want to depend on a lighter. I have a stove with one that no longer works and have friends with JetBoils with the same problem.Īlso the replacement igniter is only $5.95. The small built-in piezo-electric igniters all wear out rather quickly. However my personal recommendation is forget the built-in igniter and keep the lighter (or other external ignition source), which has multiples uses, weighs very little, and is easily replaceable. If you still don't get a consistent spark, replace the igniter with a new one.Reinstall the igniter in the stove and position the tip of the electrode about 1/4" or closer from the surface of the burner.

  • Shake the ignitor and the burner to remove any excess cleaner and let it dry for 10-15 minutes.
  • It's recommended that you wear gloves while doing this. Also spray out the burner to clean out any dirt and dust.
  • Get some electrical contact cleaner and spray it directly into all orifices of the igniter.
  • Use a Scotch-Brite pad or steel wool to clean the burner itself so that it also exposes clean metal.
  • Often times these get corroded and dirty.
  • Take a fine file or sandpaper and make sure there is only clean metal on the electrode tip.
  • Replace the ignitor to correct the problem. When electronic ignitors with a good power supply and a clean spark gap still fail to spark, electronic components could be at fault. If a voltmeter shows power at the input to the ignitor module, the battery box and connections work properly. Gnawing rodents sometimes sever ignitor wires. Look for loose or corroded connections and for broken or chewed wires. If new batteries don't fix the problem, check the wiring that connects the battery box to the ignitor. If clean and correctly aligned electronic ignitors fail to produce sparks, check the batteries first. If a clean piezoelectric starter creates no spark, replace the ignitor module. If a spark appears, follow ordinary lighting procedures to start the grill. Pushing the ignitor button once should cause a spark. Clean the gap with a soft brush, and allow the ignitor to dry completely before testing again. Debris in the spark gap could short out the electrode. With the ignitor in proper position, pressing the button should create a visible spark. And then there's the other number one (1) problem with torch lighters it is the quality of butane being burned. A cheap fix is to use an igniter from a utility lighter. I can buy a new lighter or fix it by replacing the piezo ignition. The sparking tip of the ignitor must align with the opening of the lighting tube or fuel may not reach the spark gap. Lots of times the piezo igniter is defective It will no longer 'click' and or will not spark. Spiders, wasps or other insects sometimes build nests that block the tubes. Fuel could fail to reach the ignitor because of debris in the lighting tubes. If the grill lights with a match, the problem lies in the ignitor.

Most grills include a metal match holder and a lighting port. If the grill fails to light when operated properly, check the burners by lighting manually with a match. Make sure the tank has fuel and the main valve is open.

The owner's manual gives procedures specific to the model of grill, but troubleshooting steps vary only slightly by model. Dead batteries or corroded contacts prevent normal operation. Electronic ignitors depend on batteries for power. Piezoelectric ignitors need no batteries, but the generating crystal could break. Electronic ignitors activate an oscillator circuit, charging a capacitor until voltage climbs high enough to jump across the spark gap. Piezoelectric ignitors mechanically compress a piezoelectric crystal that generates a voltage when under pressure. The spark sets the gas alight, and the flame travels back to the burner through the tube. When the grill operator opens the valve to a burner, gas enters a metal tube leading to the ignitor's spark gap.
